RED SHIRT WEDNESDAY

Local union members are encouraged to wear red shirts on Wednesdays as a demonstration of solidarity to management and each other in our workplaces.

The practice was started by the Communication Workers of America. They began wearing red on Thursdays to honor Gerry Hogan, a member who was killed while walking the picket line while during their 1989 strike. He was run down by a car driven by a “scab” - the teenage daughter of management who was never charged for the crime.

Today the practice remains a symbol of unity and solidarity among all union workers. We encourage our members to wear red every Wednesday as a sign of support for our own local, but for all organized labor movements.
